Medical experts after a diagnosis of Mesothelioma, the doctor will then begin the monitoring process. This process is used to knowing how far the cancer has spread in patient's body. By using the CT Scan and MRI. They currently use 3 monitoring system to diagnose and treat different plural mesothelioma.

Each measurement system has different variables, among others, extensive cancer, lymph node involvement, metastasis, and many others. Some systems are;

1. Butchart System which is a measurement system mesothelioma of the oldest and most commonly used and primarily used to determine how the mass luad tumor. Butchart system divides mesothelioma into four stages:
  • Stage I - Is Mesothelioma cancer seen in the part where on the chest area to the right or next, or pleural cavity, or can also be found in the diaphragm
  • Stage II - Is Mesothelioma cancer has attacks the lining the chest and has already reached esophagus, heart, or pleura on both sides andcan also affect the lymph nodes.
  • Stage III - Is Mesothelioma cancer has through the diaphragm and into the abdominal cavity or peritoneum and can also affect the lymph nodes outside the chest.
  • Stage IV - Is Mesothelioma cancer has spread through the bloodstream to other organs
2. TNM system is a newer system that is used for mesothelioma to consider variables such as tumor size and extent cause, involvement of lymph nodes, and metastasis. In the TNM system, the disease is divided into four stages:

  • Stage I - Is Mesothelioma cancer on the right or left chest cavity may have spread to the diaphragm, pericardium, or lung on the same side. While lymph nodes are not affected.
  • Stage II - Is Mesothelioma cancer has spread from one side of the chest to lymph nodes near the lungs on the same side. This disease may also spread to the diaphragm, lungs, or pericardium on the same side.
  • Stage III - Is Mesothelioma cancer has entered the chest wall, muscle, heart, esophagus, ribs, and vital organs in the pleural cavity on the same side. Where Lymph nodes may or may not be affected due to the tumor.
  • Stage IV - Is Mesothelioma cancer has spread to lymph nodes in the chest area on the other side of the tumor, or has spread to the pleural cavity or lung on the other, or have reached the organs in the abdominal region or neck. Each metastasis involved in this phase.
3. Brigham System is a system monitoring the latest mesothelioma cancer. This system evaluates several variables in the monitoring process, including involvement of lymph nodes and surgical ability to remove the mesothelioma tumor. Brigham system is separated into four stages:
  • Stage 1 - mesothelioma tumor can be removed by surgery and lymph nodes are not affected.
  • Stage 2 - mesothelioma tumor can be surgically removed, but the affected lymph nodes.
  • Stage 3 - mesothelioma tumor can not be removed surgically and the cancer has moved to the chest wall, heart cavity, stomach or diaphragm. Lymph nodes may also be affected.
  • Stage 4 - mesothelioma tumor can not be removed surgically and the cancer has metastasized (spread) to other areas of the body organs.
